I've set up a new Flickr group called "GWR Steam Locomotives" to collect together photos of, you guessed it, GWR steam locomotives! I thought this would come in useful as a resource, not only for myself, but other modellers (and of course anyone interested in the subject more generally ....
Oh its just one of those days.In preparation for the predicted weekends rain I have printed off my Scalescenes goods shed. Except I forgot to switch the scaling on the printer off so everything was shrunk to fit letter size paper. Luckily I do have plenty of paper and ink available.... ....
So things are chugging along "behind the scenes" so to speak.I've placed an order for an Ultrascale conversion kit for my Bachmann 08 (14 weeks delivery quoted on that). As well as the required track components from Exactoscale to enable to make all the track for the visible section of the layout, a ....
Where has this week gone...? It doesn't feel like over a week since I started this point kit. This weekend being first opportunity to pick this kit up again since the 18th. Thought I would put up a few more photos showing progress.... mainly for anyone who does not know these kits, or is hesitant ab ....
I've spent the last couple of days giving thought to how I would make the baseboard for this layout out of pink foam. The first and most obvious was is to get layout sized slabs of foam cut to shape and glued together. Which I dismissed as quickly as I thought of it. I searched for a magazine that ....
Flymo said "I certainly hope that the pink extruded polystyrene is suitable for a P4 layout as it's exactly what I'm planning on using".That makes me feel a lot better, knowing I don't have to dismiss the material out of hand. I feel confident in using pink foam. In the past though my "baseboards" w ....
Hmmm... Life is never easy, is it?In my last post, I was thinking that the greatest hurdle to overcome in restoring the LNWR two plank wagon would be to restore the warped dropsides to some form of straightness. Wrong! I've actually made pretty good progress on that particular task, and they only ....
Some Bill Bedford coupling rods for a 57xx arrived in the post this morning. Now I've got no excuse to complete the conversion. That's if I can work out how to put these coupling rods together!!!I've found some assembly instructions for a NER E1 here on Bill Bedford's web site . This kit looks to ha ....
Progress continues on the L&Y battery electric, hopefully nearly done apart from lining (which was a bit over-the-top full-on swirly bits on the prototype!). Firstly, some sprung buffers. The photo shows an original whitemetal casting (rear), and a bored out casting (middle) and a couple of stee ....
I have some Western Region Hydraulics going through the workshop at the moment; this one stands out a little, 846 Steadfast. What makes it a little different is that it had its front end 'tidied' following a works visit in mid-1970. The model will depict Steadfast just after this overhaul and will b ....
Oh boy. Now I've put my foot down and decided on the layout plan, things are getting serious. What type of baseboard construction do I use? I am, without a doubt. One of the worlds worst woodworkers. So getting a square and level baseboard will be a task of Herculean proportions for me. You wouldn' ....
My Ultrascale order has arrived : P4 wheel conversion packs for a Bachmann Pannier and a Class 29. Hmmm ........ which one to tackle first. While I am now excited by the thought of quickly having a P4 loco, I am also bathing in the success of the B7 point kit. So this evening I've made a start on the ....
Another 3 feet or so of trackwork have been completed between the weekend and this evening. The 45xx chassis has also gained brake blocks since I last posted and received its first coat of paint - or should that be grime? I'll post some pictures eventually, I promise! The Bachmann brake rigging ....
Not unlike Arthur's garden, my layout will only have one shed. Goods shed that is. But I have 2 in mind. Firstly there is a very nice looking structure available from Scalescenes that I'm really quite taken by. I like Scalescenes a lot. I've made a few of their kits and even messed around with conve ....
I've just got back from Sheffield City Hall - I went to see Russell Howard who is currently touring the country on his sell out Dingledodies tour. He was excellent! I very much enjoyed his support act too, Mark Olver. I have seen both acts live previously, both at Hull University's comedy club durin ....
First on the workbench, and number 1 in my fleet of somewhat eclectically recorded list of vehicles is an LNWR two-plank permanent way wagon. This was built from the Ratio four-pack of wagons which I believe is still available. To fit in with the permanent way purpose of the wagon, it is part-loaded ....
I picked up some great bargains from 'The Works' a couple of weeks ago:'The Great Western at Swindon Works' Alan S.Peck. 278pp. Hardback. £8.99 (RRP £30)'Around the Great Western Railway Then & Now' Laurence Walters. 256pp. Hardback. £8.99 (RRP £35) 'The Great Cen ....
Following Chris Navard's shameless self promotion(!) I bought the July edition of Hornby Magazine purely for the article on Catcott Burtle. It is a masterpiece; no two ways about it. The layout demonstrates just how Chris is able to judge colours and texture which make for an incredible realistic re ....
Last night I finally finished my first B7 P4 Track Company point kit. I'm really pleased with the result and the crossing V seems to be OK. Ran a couple of wagons through the crossing V with no problems, nice and smooth. I still feel the V is out of specification but this does show that there are so ....
It's been a while since I did any work on the B Set but a recent spurt has seen me detailing the ends and roof and getting some primer on the whole lot - all the easier to pick problems not readily apparent to the eye when everything is brass. The end-steps are from Slaters and the lamp irons are fr ....
Not sure if I can post videos or how it will work out but here is a short clip I generated on my phone yesterday of the inaugral running of the B-set behind Sean's 87xx. If you run it backwards, it looks much better! I'll try to get some good close-up stills tonight to post here. ....
Our planned mid-week break came just at the right time from my railway modelling point of view. Having planned and planned for weeks and just come up with something I really like. I needed a break from model railways and in particular that latest plan. So my wife and I headed up to Duluth, Minnesota ....
Welcome!Welcome to my trials and tribulations, musings and mutterings, successes and failures, as I try to remember how to model in P4 after a gap of more than ten years of idle armchair occupation. Why Beer and Buckjumpers? The Buckjumpers bit sort of suggested itself. Wherever I've lived, the loca ....
Here is a further development of last Fridays design. Something that I am rather excited by. I'm getting a feel from this design that I didn't quite get from the previous one. This design is pulling together some of the scenic ideas from the larger Saltfleet haven designs into something half the siz ....
Feeling rather pleased with myself today. I just completed my first P4 Track Co. kit for a A6 right handed turnout. In all honesty I have to say that I don't know what I was worried about. Yes, the instructions are daunting at first look. But read them a few times, identify all the parts and follow ....
For anyone that is interested in the North Cornwall Railway this book has got to be part of their collection. Bought by my partner as a birthday present, I have only, up until the last few days, scanned the pages. While I've been away I've started to read more and found this book to be a very in dep ....
You'll pretty soon be sick of all the schemes that I come up with in trying to build a P4 layout. I wasn't meant to be planning at all this afternoon. I was just resting my lunch before popping out for a 4 mile run and I was leafing through Iain C Rice's "Light Railway Layout Design" and it happene ....
